There are different forms of pleasure. There are more ways to be entertained than by say, what you get out of a crime novel.

I'm reading The Road right now and I would in no way consider it a "fun" book or in anyway "suspenseful", but I am enjoying how it was written, the complete and utter bleakness of it, and the struggle of its characters. I enjoy it but I would not describe it as pleasurable reading.

>There are different forms of pleasure...

I agree with this, basically, but I'd say there are a lot of different senses, sensations, that the word "pleasure" covers that people like to equivocate between when they talk about reading versus fucking or whatever.

To have more sensuous understanding of the world that surrounds you... four pleasure, of course, since everything we do is for pleasure to some extent.

I, for example, used the wit I attained from books to hit a third-year high-school prego until she, not without my persuading her to it, revealed she is such. It was followed by my absent minded utterance"aaaahhhh", then a successful contriving of an image of a helpful, cheerful fellow that doesn't care if you are pregnant, or I hope so.

that was today

pleasure. toni Morrison said something along the lines of a person who doesn't read lives one life. a person who reads lives many.

I think fiction can be a revealer of truth about reality in ways that's hard to spell out in nonfiction. not common but I think this is true. or at least in fiction the truth can be revealed in a much more concise and universally understood way.

Maybe I'm just weird, but when I read for 'insight' or something, I don't think it's really an insight in the sense that it tells me an actual truth about the world or something. Like, I don't expect any utility out of it - if I did, I'd probably be despairing at this point, because I've come to a point where I am at best highly suspect of the ability of fiction to describe or reveal the world. When I read for 'insight,' I'm hoping for some revelation that will make me think, yes, but I'm sort of just hoping for that because I enjoy thinking, I enjoy the feeling of that revelation, not because I actually expect it to change something.

Am I a horrible, bourgeois dilettante?
