I think he's a pretentious cunt who makes deliberately obscure references and relies on his liberal hipster audience to either miss the reference but laugh out of fear of being found out (95%) or actually get the reference (5%), instead of making actual jokes. He should watch some stand up by a real comedian like Al Murray aka the pub landlord.
