What was the worst major literary movement in history, and why was it modernism? The neo-modernist stuff is particularly bad, seriously, go read umbrella.

The worst, with some doubt, is late 19th century American realism. It took the superfluousness of Romanticism and edged it with the incessant need to depict the world "as it is" that is found in modernist texts. However, unlike modernism, this particular movement of realism opted to be expansive rather than specific. What occurred were a mass production of texts that are long, stale, and over encompassing. These realists literally attempted to examine the entirety of the world in a realistic way, which in itself is an unrealistic goal.
