How is this at all related to tumblr? All the photos in here are black and white. They tend to smooth the features, improve skin complexion, bring out facial features through high contrast, etc. If you honestly think your favorite philosopher looked intelligent and mysterious in person, you're delusional. Most likely they were unremarkable.
