Has anyone else ever vastly overestimated their teacher's tolerance for their bullshit?

>taking intro to int'l politics

Not really. I picked fights with teachers a lot and on few occasions even gave myself as a sort of anti-teaching to them, but nothing's ever gotten out of my hand (at least I hope).

I was the lovable slacker in math classes, but I'm also ridiculously good at math, so... The teacher just let me do whatever I wanted and then I studied for a week before the exams and passed. I did two subjects on math in school too, and there was only 3 people in one class, it was really fucking funny being the lovable slacker in that class (and in the other one, it was a hot chick teacher, that class was fun too)

This point becomes evident when comparing the rate at which undergrads go on to get PhDs between Columbia and my undergrad (Reed). Hey, fellow mature student here. Maybe some catharsis for you:

>doing group assignment at fairly competitive/prestigious university
>take academic shit super seriously because going to undergrad at my age was a huge fucking investment, sacrifice, risk, etc., basically my whole life and savings on the line
>expect people at this uni of all places to be similar
>get saddled with:
>asian kid who shows up late, brags he's never been to any class ever but still aces everything, spends entire time on his phone and acting like a fucking too-cool-for-the-room douche
>preppy but insanely arrogant/pretentious girl who interrupts constantly and affirms that she is a future politician, also uses her phone and ignores you half the time, brags about public speaking skills
>some faggot who never shows up (three times), but still wants credit
>be the one who goes to the prof and sends out emails trying to corral them
>they wait until 4 days before the assignment to even reply to email
>spend a few hours before they get there prepping for what research to do for presentation, come up with multiple ideas to be flexible
>all arrive late
>asian overrides everything and refuses to do anything but 1/5th of a short article
>girl agrees, mostly just uses her phone
>now stuck with these assholes
>go to prof about it, demonstrate good faith
>do side research related to my segment of the project
>day of presentation comes
>asian kid makes himself look like a fucking retard, prof visibly annoyed
>girl stutters like she's having a nervous meltdown
>other guy completely lost, prof visibly annoyed again
>deliver competent presentation
>get A+ with special "sorry you had to deal with that" comment, plus a hint that they got hammered

It really is staggering to see the difference between the people who worked for it, or made the choice to go to university themselves, and the trust fund babbies whose university track was entirely plotted and greased by their parents. I've met late twenties mature students from a notoriously terrible university who were much more serious scholars than all the little 5.0 private prep school kids I've met here.

hate it to break it to you but publishers are more likely to publisher a mediocre hack from columbia or nyu than some hippy doctor from stony brook who goes around curing peasants, unless you can weave some kind anti-islamic or anti-chinese propoganda into the story, welcome to real life

I am fast friends with Disappointment. I still dare to dream. I see the beauty and idyllity (I just made that word up, but I like it better than "idealness") in things---I wouldn't have it any other way.

The feeling of resolve you have is good, but don't let it make you pretentious. Delusion is a good thing when it makes you take on the 'unrealistic' challenges that the average person would scoff at, but it's a bad thing when it makes you ignore hard work or hard truths because you're infinitely sure of your own greatness.

Wanting to be a genius is a weird mixture of loving and hating yourself. You have to be sort of arrogant to think you could possibly be great to begin with, but you also have to be able to think you're total fucking garbage unless you are perfect.

I'm not pretentious. I'm being brusquely honest because I wouldn't expect anyone to read paragraphs of my life story.

You're right about hard work---it takes you further than only natural intelligence ever will.

I'm familiar with perfectionism. Someone once told me something that's stuck with me: "I know people like you. You'll never be happy unless you work yourself to death."

American Universities are actually pretty top notch. Aside from the obvious top-tier English universities and McGill, everything else is pretty shit IMO

how did you define the paradox and trivial to come to that conclusion?

I agree that the exact location of grains of sand to become a heap is not of the utmost importance, but vagueness in concepts in communication, the fact that words we create to be distinct are best understood with overlap (think the middle of venn diagrams) and blurred edges is somewhat concerning, no?

at least within the sphere of philosophy

>pre-law

laughing out loud.

i read statistics somewhere when i was considering applying to law school that pre-law students were among the least likely to be accepted into schools. the most likely? philosophy, physics/engineering, and math.

criminal justice majors were also all the way at the bottom.

I wasn't referring to a specific pre-law program, but rather one of the several degrees that are especially helpful in applying to law school. I don't think Reed even has a formal pre-law program.
