>tfw the moon is as often a male deity as a female one

why live?

>> No.5773719

Friend, the moon cannot be a constant with its ever shifting faces. To place restrictions on it would be to restrain its very nature!

Take delight in the moon's freedom to be whatever it likes except constant. It will never be constant.

Really? What world do you live on? The moon is always feminine, for obvious reasons.

That's what I believed, but it seems to be a wholly western perspective.

As you can see, about as many cultures have a male moon god as a female one. It's even enough, at least, to convince me that the moon has no true resonance with either male or female.

Honestly, it makes more sense to have Sun as a female deity and the Moon as a male deity.

You have to investigate each relationship to understand it, anon. Not just look at wikipedia. Try to find out what is the role of the Moon to each culture. For example, in patriarchal societies in which the man always comes first, combined with the notion that the Moon reflects the light of the Sun, the Moon will be female. In others, the Moon might appear as the original dim light that is transformed in creative force by the Sun, as if a male Moon impregnated a female Sun.

None of this is fixed. It's not only the gender of the Moon that changes from culture to culture, but also what it means to be of that gender. You also have to account for the fact that a lot of these cultures borrow from each other and so you might find a strong tradition that appears to be fixed only because that's all you know.

The characteristics of the planets and other natural things speak of the relationships between people as well as their relationship to this nature. Of course it will change from culture to culture. Consider that in some cultures, the months of December and January are given as a moment of rebirth, because of course, after the winter solstice it only gets better. That is true to a lot of cultures, but still, it only works for the northern hemisphere. There is something in common between the cultures that take the Moon as female and the cultures that take the Moon as male.

lovely song anon, thanks for sharing!

Funnily enough, in the german language the moon is male (der Mond) while the sun is female (die Sonne), while the day is male (der Tag) and the night is female (die Nacht).

I find this fitting, since in my aesthetic ideas I always correlate the female with the fire, the hot, the emotional (the heat of the sun) but also with the obscure and the uncertain (the darkness of the night), while I associate the male with the calmness and the coolness of the moon light, while also associating it with the clarity and precision that the day's brightness allows.

Needless to say, the most aesthetically perfect appearance is the moon at day. It is a shame that the sun can't shine at night.
