I already did /pol/ and am planning to do /v/, /mu/, /tv/, and /b/.

I figure /lit/ is the second most political board so I have left in political affiliation as a field. I thought it would be interesting to compare the makeup of /pol/ and /lit/.

I understand that, I agree with you. The later part of the 1800s and the early 1900s saw the monarchies leaving commodity currencies and moving to fiat currencies. When WW1 started, pretty much all the monarchies starting printing money to fund their war. This occurs throughout history when the monarch sees no way out but the inflation of currency, like the byzantines and the roman empire. And it tends to coincide with their eventual fall. So yes what they did in those periods was wrong, but what I'm trying to say is that a smart king would understand that the short term gains made by inflation would lead to troubles down the road for them.

In terms of democratically elected governments, they almost always run deficits to satisfy those who elected them. The leader doesn't care if they make a mess, and has no liability ,since they'll just pass the problem onto the next ruler.

I'd also have to disagree that "growth hovered around zero until the 1900s", that simply isn't true, there was plenty of growth in the 1800s.
