My parents treated them like children's books and read them to me when I was very, very young. I still remember how much I loved that. Kids do really well with gory stories. Later I read them myself and also gravitated toward Arthurian stuff. I loved Lloyd Alexander especially. He wrote a great children's series based loosely on The Mabinogion.
