Okay /lit/ I'm in highschool (18 bitches). My english teacher keeps forcing us to read these horrible fucking books by filthy niggers. They suck. All they do is talk about yams and shit. And bitch about whitey getting them down (implying if it wasn't for us they all wouldn't be living in mud huts) (implying they haven't gone back to living in mud huts since they kicked whitey out)

When I was in high school I got so fed up with having to read African-American literature.

However, three years later, I kind of appreciate having just a little bit more perspective. Reading things you don't like can help you figure out why you do like the things you do, and inform your opinion as to why you don't like the things you don't. Overall, I now rate those books rather highly, in light of how reading them has affected my appreciation of literature as a whole. (Not to mention that they are representative of entire movements that affected other areas of the arts as well, such as the Harlem movement, etc)

I think I should indicate why I am here in Birmingham, since you have been influenced by the view which argues against "outsiders coming in." I have the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization operating in every southern state, with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. We have some eighty five affiliated organizations across the South, and one of them is the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights. The thing that irritated me about reading those books in class is that the history isn't properly explained. BLAH BLAH WHITE PEOPLE OPPRESSED BLACK PEOPLE but. They don't really explain anything about the civil war/motives/tension of the time period. After taking a course on the civil war in college Huck Finn is slightly less gay.
