Honestly though, try watching art documentaries (anything by BBC).
They're good at pointing out the beauty of things, which might help you feel. Art often lies in the details - the beauty of a glaze, or how delicate that smile is (Mona Lisa is a good example).
You're supposed to go close and see the details.

Though anyone describing anything as "cool" might be a lost cause.

It has to do with the clarity of the depiction. The Egyptians had art as a way of preserving things, so everything was painted in the view that's the clearest and the most inclusive (so the torso from the front, but the feet from the side etc. etc. but also that a more important person/object is bigger). The Greeks and Romans slowly started to inch away from this idea, but then around 500 AD Rome definitively fell. Medieval paintings went sort of back to the Egyptian idea, where it's all about clarity: you want to know what's what.

That's an interesting way of explaining the shift to more figurative art. The shift, however, had already begun at the start of the second century CE. By the time of Constantine, Roman art was already closer to what we now recognize as medieval than the illusionistic Hellenified roman art of the late republic and early empire.

Oh sorry if it wasn't clear, but yeah that's what I meant with "Greeks and Romans started to inch away from this idea". And you can clearly see that some of the innovations of Greeks & Romans stayed into the dark ages, like the idea that clothing drapes, and foreshortening.

OH FUCK I can't read, yeah you're right. I usually just use 500 AD as the fall of Rome as you can argue for about 500 years in each direction about the beginning of the end/the definitive end of Rome. Obviously you can see differences in art too. But yeah, good that you clarified that.
