I recently purchased the last three novels of John Updike's Rabbit series, save for Rabbit Remembered, and because of monetary restraints I cannot get Rabbit, Run any time soon.

I was wondering if it would be terrible to start reading one of the other three first?

I know Rabbit Is Rich & Rabbit At Rest won Pulitzer Prizes. How meaningless would these be without the first of the series?

If I'm told that it would be egregious to read anything but Rabbit, Run first, I will just read Giles Goat-Boy instead.

In Rabbit, Run, I liked writing in the present tense. You can move between minds, between thoughts and objects and events with a curious ease not available to the past tense. I don't know if it is clear to the reader as it is to the person writing, but there are kinds of poetry, kinds of music you can strike off in the present tense

why not?

how the hell do people try to become serious readers without a library card if they are not rich? I don't even understand. Without a library card I'd be spending at least $50 a week on books

why did you buy the last 3 lol

i definitely think you should read the first one first. i don't think you'll die if you read the second one first but you are meant to have a connection to the characters already.

how many books do you read a week

50$ is like 25 books if you're good at finding deals

go to the dmv and get one. or I think you can have your parent be there and get the library card for you if you wanna suffer some embarrassment. Some libraries even let you fill out info online and send it to you.

I read 3 books a week. I live in a relatively small city that has only two used book stores and they're both expensive as fuck. I work in a book store and even with my 35% discount it'd probably still be around $50 a week

anyway I don't see the purpose of spending more than $0 a week when there is literally no need to at all
