to be fair "idol worship" has a pretty nebulous and broad meaning in theology

is there a distinction between New and "Old" Atheism?

chasubles are some of the best religious threads

>> No.5645086

It's just a way for old theism to discredit atheism by emphasising their own timelessness. Religions change and lack of religion changes along side them.

It's a useful term to designate a popular phenomenon of radical atheism as opposed to a restricted, mostly intellectual atheism (say, Bertrand Russell).

Clearly there are connections between the two but I think it's a useful distinction, especially since "new atheists" tend to be comparatively close-minded/proselytizing.

>> No.5645100

>>5645079
Enough of one that they've put that term on themselves. Same goes for "Atheism+".

>>5645061
What I mean by idol worship is the canonization of these people and, by extension, their ideas. I feel like there's not much room for growth within the Atheist community because of this. The "growth" they do experience is more social justice shit like Atheism+, which has almost nothing to do with theology.

Also, as an Atheist (or an apatheist) I have no interest in the kind of dogmatism practiced by a large portion of the community. Sometimes it feels like the Church all over again, minus the God.

>Sometimes it feels like the Church all over again, minus the God.

That's because the problem has never been religion or atheism, a shortcoming always confined to the other.

It's always been dogmatism, which is a human phenomenon applicable to self.

[personal note]

I really don't know what to make of the whole atheism vs religion vs faith thing anymore. I see a serious need for a moral vocation to love (and love seriously) in an age of vapid self-intersest
