What is your favourite opening line, or paragraph, of all time, /lit/, is there a particular reason you like it? Mine is:
> "That morning she pours Teacher's over my belly and licks it off. That afternoon she tries to jump out the window."

>> No.5587269

>A screaming comes across the sky.

"Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show. To begin my life with the beginning of my life, I record that I was born (as I have been informed and believe) on a Friday, at twelve o'clock at night. It was remarked that the clock began to strike, and I began to cry, simultaneously."

"Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta."

and

"Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendia was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice."

Fuck yeah Raymond Carver. I don't get why 99% of the posters on the board seemingly haven't read the modern master of the American short story.

I've read him, and my gut reaction was to say, "Nah, most people on this board have read Carver," but then I realized this might not be true and I might constantly overestimate the amount these other people read.

It will be a bright and calm day.

Not so many people really get into short story, I think that a lot of novel readers dislike the short form and vice versa.

Middle grounds are rarely the best of both worlds. As a short story reader I feel the novella is too long to go into the insane amount of detail you can get with a short story and falls too short of the content a full novel would have. But it really depends more in each work, if we compare shitty fanfics no format will look good.
