Talking of comics, anyone interested in Lovecraft should also check out Mike Mignola's 'Hellboy'. The first arc is a bit weak but it hits its stride with 'Wake the Devil'. Cthuloid creatures make appearances that are often more subtle and understated than in Lovecraft's original works.

BPRD is worth a try too, although a bit more hit and miss.

Hell no, but the Cthulhu stories aren't his best. Call of Cthulhu is a lot of fun, but it's by no means horrifying, it's the concept that he lays down in the few stories about him that's amazing.
