Is there a recommended list for horror?
I have only read Lovecraft and Stephen King but they don't really make me feel fear in anyway.

Fear is too much of a embodied sensory experience to be effectively conveyed in writing.

Go watch some movies.

If Lovecraft doesn't scare you at all, you haven't had your first crippling existential crisis yet.

the most terrifying thing about Lovecraft is the dawning realization on the reader's part that they will not be remembered by history but this autistic prose butcher will

>scared by movies
The last movie that scared my was kairo and that was at least five years ago. Concepts can be more scary than flashy images, Kafka is the horror writer for the mature.

What Stephen King did you read? There are three things you should know before getting into his work.

1. His short stories are scarier than his novellas and his novellas are scarier than his novels.

2. A lot of his fiction isn't even supposed to be scary.

3. Since he's a prolific author, the quality of his work varies a lot.

you forgot:
4. he has a watersport fetish and constantly mentions urinating, he even wrote a story about a special toilet tiger who catches those who go to pee

A few that should be on any recommendation list:

Jack Ketchum - Girl Next Door, Off Season
Richard Laymon - The Cellar, Travelling Vampire Show
Clive Barker - Books of Blood, Hellbound Heart, Damnation Game
Dan Simmons - Song of Kali, Carrion Comfort, Summer of Night, The Terror
Thomas Ligotti - Teatro Grottesco
Kathe Koja - Cipher
Richard Matheson - I am Legend, Hell House
Ray Bradbury - Something Wicked this Way Comes, October Country

Is anyone here a fan of M.R. James? I'm thinking of picking up his complete ghost stories, sounds like a good creepy winter read.

I wouldent say you need a crippling existential crisis. I think you just need to be a ceartin kind of guy yunno.

Like where you're almost alone already, and you can really, really picture something like what he depicts rising up or being discovered. There are so many action movies and video games and stuff like that where we never really bother to think about what if it were really, truely in front of us.

Lovecraft doesn't have an effect on a modern audience because we're constantly being told how small and worthless we are from sources innumerable. When Lovecraft was alive Earth was all we had to consider. Mankind was the centerpiece of the universe. Things only mattered because of us- we were the purpose of the world. Lovecraft was the first to speak against that.

Read Clive Barker's Books Of Blood. Very King-esque, and King himself said Barker was the shit. In those exact words.

Only horror book I've ever read.

It scared me so hard that I've never even been remotely tempted to read anything in the horror genre ever again

>> No.5586253

Robert Chambers' The King in Yellow is a pretty good series of short stories.

I too need good horror, but the problem is this
I read The Island of Doctor Moreau
I read Red Dragon
I read The Monstrumologist
I read The Shining
I'm currently reading It

And it hasn't scared me properly once

I need something that's actually scary

You really think that if OP has read Lovecraft and King that IHNM is going to scare him?
Yes, you do, which is why offering advice having only read a single short story in the genre is a bad idea.
