I haven't read God is Not Great, but if you can get past the "le fedora" bullshit stigma, I think he's pretty good. I really enjoyed "Letters to a Young Contrarian" and a lot of essays and political commentary. I used to use his speeches/debates as background noise when I was working on papers, they're pretty interesting.

An articulate and intelligent man, but he got too caught up in defending the Iraq war and fedora tipping at the end of his career. His brother is similarly well read and is more relevant these days, even if he has his own similarly misguided positions.

He is a good guide and compiler of ideas because of his remarkable memory. If you want to understand something deeply, he is probably not the person to go to. He is a destroyer, not a creator.

Prepare to feel super jealous. Here is an email he sent me a couple of months before he died:

Sir,
The idea of your service awes me (and does me too much credit). I can only tell you what you already know - about the extraordinary calibre of the people you will meet.
On a micro scale, I am honored to have introduced you to some of those authors and feel gratified that you met this. There are more minor Orwell triumphs in store.
Sincerely
Christopher H

It is a fact he propagated bullshit ex post facto moralizing justifications for the invasion of Iraq.

I adore his writing.
My only criticism is that he spent far too much time arguing against religion. I much preferred his polemics against individuals, I'm hard pressed to find anybody who does it quite so well.

Well perhaps he was about to launch into something about a particular religious individual, but realized the real target was that other major societal spook. Yes yes, poor judgment thinking the US could just waltz into Iraq and it would be like Americans in Japan after WWII, hardly a policy decision a journalist can make, and don't tell me his articles were cited to sway any policy makers, he wasn't a fucking lobbyist.
