What was the last book that gripped you so hard that not even 4chan and porn could tear you away?

it took a while for me to get into it, but once it clicked i didn't want to do anything else but read it. i found the chapters very moreish, the 'just one more sentence' effect.

There are few things better than a book you can and want to read in a single sitting and little worse than not being able to.

I thought The Man Who Folded Himself was a close second in the gripping and pulpy yet poignant department. I'm almost tempted to say 'any sci fi longer than a short story but less than 350 pages' fits the bill, but I know better, so I'll just add pic related.

The Status Civilization, by Sheckley.

Not the most "literary" novel, but fun as fuck.

I'd probably have to say the magus too, Even though I've read about thirty books since.

The Running Man by Stephen King. I've tried some King books before and didn't like them much, but Running Man was completely gripping, and nothing like the Arnie movie.

The Magus is actually the last book I read, finished it recently. The prose was absolutely beautiful and it kept up the mystery consistently throughout. Each time you thought you had grasped what was going on, you were wrong, and many interesting discussions and stories throughout.

It's a difficult read though in terms of development. A coworker thought it sounded interesting and said she wanted to read it next. I knew she would stop judging by her reading habits. I even had a friend who read a lot give up on it.

I suppose you gotta put in the investment to get something out of it.

Reading Brothers Karamazov for the first time. It's got slower parts, but when it picks up into one of the frenzied bits, it's damned addictive.

>The prose was absolutely beautiful

This is sad to hear. Typically beautiful purple prose means the story is garbage and so are the characters, the plot can be ignored and generally the book should be burned. Am I correct?
