I'm reading this right now actually, got the hardcover. It's pretty good.

One particularly funny Borges-ism in an early chapter: he says that soldiers scream when they go into battle, and feels the need to justify this assertion. How does he do it? "We know this from a poem by Kipling"! He really lived his life in books.

There's no reason, it just petered out... I remember years ago there used to be this one anon who'd go to the effort of making image files, where the image was the book cover, but you could also open the image in WinRAR or whatever and it would contain the mobi/ePub. That anon probably just left.

There were other share-threads, but with the downfall of one-click hosters around megaupload it has become a bit more annoying to host stuff for the long term.

There's rather more worth in compilations, which save time and double as recommendation lists,
and in the files you share being verified, especially when it comes to ebook formats where much of the less standard stuff is (often poorly) converted from PDFs or other sources.

>> No.5547356

I still have the thousands of books that one Anon uploaded years ago. Good times.

>> No.5547374

>>5547329
Oh man, especially lib.gen often varies wildly in quality. mobilism is usually better, but has less results because they only upload the commercial release, while lib.gen often has the PDF conversions which are full of errors from the automatic process.

I wish book piracy would have the same standards of quality as movie piracy, but it looks like that won't ever happen. We also don't have automated quality checks - with a pirated movie, you can check the quality at a glance (or even just look at the metadata of the file). With a pirated book, you have to read through it all to find all typos/weirdly inserted special characters/broken paragraphs/randomly inserted page numbers/etc.

Even though they take their files from the usual piracy pages, I feel like share threads are a bit more intimate. Often the anon "advertises" his or her link, leading to other anons finding novel authors or works. Plus the anon can usually vouch for the quality of the file.

OP I wish I could give back but the only "rare" ebook I possess is Salinger's Three Stories that was posted here months ago. I will upload it if you want it.

>> No.5547494

>>5547374
Addendum: A bad movie copy doesn't particularly change the tone or structure of a movie, even though it makes it less enjoyable.

A bad book copy, on the other hand, can change the entire "tone" of the book. For example, Thomas Bernhard often did not use paragraphs to make monologues seem more "unstoppable", like a river breaking its dam, completely out of breath.

A badly converted book might lose all of its paragraphs and suddenly you have some additional symbolism which may not fit the theme of the text, or you have some extra symbols which may or may not be there intentionally. It's really hard to "trust" a pirated ebook and when I read these copies, I wonder whether I'm actually reading the copy the way the author intended. By now, the minute I find some broken / or ( or ) in the text, I delete it and go buy the original. What if the "pirater" has forgotten to add a chapter? The book becomes a malleable thing, all of a sudden, which you can't trust.

Reading OP's book. So I love Borges and the book is quite interesting, but if that was the way he lectured, I dunno, I'd be kinda disappointed. He knows his material very well, but he doesn't seem to be going anywhere with his exposition. Only read 20% so far.

Thoughts, anybody?

Well, he just sort of comments on what happens on the text, "Beowulf is an epic where the Dane prince slays an ogre, his mother and a dragon..."

He rarely shows you stuff you couldn't have gotten yourself just by reading the text. He could show underlying patterns, he could focus a lot more on stylistic issues, etc. But he seems happy merely cataloguing the different texts and offering a somewhat lengthy summary of them. It feels underwhelming.

I think this is because of the nature of the course, it's more of a lit 101 thing. Therefore, he's not going too far into the works - not enough time, not enough experience in the audience.

>> No.5548649

>>5548605
Right, that's what I'm trying to say, maybe. I don't doubt his knowledge, it's just that everything he says seems pretty basic. So yeah, it kinda makes sense if it's a 101 course thing.
