I found Chronicles of Amber to suffer from pretty bad writing, and all the characters to be rather flat. What did you like so much about the characters? Even of just the other books you listed I think the characters in Anathem, East of Eden, and Paradise Lost are drawn with more depth and realism.

Probably means judging things purely by the plotting without the other aspects of the story which are a big part of the plot.

Like, can something be plotted well if the characters are bad? The prose as well could dictate the pacing which is an important part of the plot.
