Hey /lit/ , /co/mrade here, i just watched "How to train your dragon" and discovered that it's originally a series of several books, is that worth reading or is too much kids-oriented?

>> No.553061

/co/mrade here. /lit/ doesn't read children's books. We read large, verbose novels, like Ayn Rand's.

you must be one of them

No reason we shouldn't, though. There's a great deal of fun to be had in reading such titles, even if they're generally written for the younglings.

Hell, Narnia was written for kids. You like Narnia don't you?

>> No.553103

/lit/ reads children's literature. Cat in the hat is a valid book here. We don't discuss things that should be on /co/ (cartoons like Watchmen and Naruto).

How to Train Your Dragon, if indeed it was a series of books, is welcome on /lit/. Welcome, OP!

It started as a series of books. Chapter books, not picture books like Shrek.

>>553116

That's too bad. I personally am of the opinion that you don't necessarily need to agree with the message of a book to enjoy it, but I can see why a person might balk at such a thing.

What? Narnia's world strikes parallels with Christianity to be sure (Aslan), but I never once felt he was actually preaching. The symbology's there, but it's not overpowering.

>> No.553173

>>553134

well, i can accept one or two moral-endings, but in Narnia is just too much, every single choice or speech is full of morals, in the end the story progress only to point one moral, and another and another, i can't read something like this to the end, it's just boring

>> No.553209

If no one had told you CS Lewis was a Christian you would lap up all the Narnia books. You have been brainwashed.

I dunno. The whole thing in the 7th book with the Calormenes and Tash Allah was kind of unsubtle.

not really : one lion, king from one land that "ressurect" guiding people to battle for him and his words

don't need to be that smart to get the message...

I'm halfway through book 2 and they're nothing like the movie, but I guess they're still cute for children's books. (Although Hiccup gets dumped on alot, figuratively and literally)

yeah, i know about the movie being "losely" based, but still loking cool, at least for me

"It isn't Narnia, you know," sobbed Lucy. "It's you. We shan't meet you there. And how can we live, never meeting you?"
"But you shall meet me, dear one," said Aslan.
"Are -are you there too, Sir?" said Edmund.
"I am," said Aslan. "But there I have another name. You must learn to know me by that name. This was the very reason why you were brought to Narnia, that by knowing me here for a little, you may know me better there."

Alright. One overt suggestion in an entire book series.

It's a world rife with symbology that echoes Christianity's. At the same time, the symbology is not identical to Christianity's nor is it overpowering to the point where it overshadows the tale.

It would take one with a severe allergy to ideas not their own to deny a book series based on "lol christian morals."

>> No.553380

Well, except for the last book, where things get fucking crazy anyway, what with everyone dying suddenly.

Of course, you could just skip the last book. It's not a particularly fulfilling conclusion, especially if you don't like the Christian undertones. Also it might be considered (perhaps?) the precursor to all those crazy anime endings

>> No.553382

>>553380
yeah, i think 6 was a lot better than 7 anyway.
7 was just depressing right up until the end.
which was as depressing, but in a nicer way.

>> No.553404

>>553350

don't be silly, there's many many christian symbology in the whole series, that's just one obvious example, but the undertones are really obvious

>>553404
I understand that some people may not especially like the undertones. But like >>553350 , up until the last book, I enjoyed the books without it feeling like Christianity was being shoved down my throat.

Just because there are undertones does not mean that I should automatically dismiss what was an otherwise entertaining story.

You probably also think Brothers Karamazov is just one big "YOU CANT HAVE MORALS WITHOUT GOD" spiel dont you

And no I am not equating Narnia with Brothers Karamazov

>> No.553632

>>553404
Could you point ou the many, many christian symbols, then? It should be easy, since the undertones are really obvious.

>> No.555398

>>553632

Ok, here we go, i will only point the obvious, without over-interpretation, or anything like this

Aislan - obvious Jesus, since the Bible refers to Jesus/God as lion, and the ressurection thing let this one REALLY blatent
White Witch - Tyrant who made "always winter and never Christmas" i REALLY have to say what's this is about? The candies thing let this even more obvious
The whole "Prince Caspian" plot - CRUSADES EVERYWHERE

etc.etc.etc
--

I don't read the whole series because, like i said, i find it very annoying, the christian symbology is obvious, overused and blatent, sorry but the the whole series sink in christian morals and speech, get over it
