Just finished this book, I thought it was great

I know Vonnegut gets a lot of hate around here (undeservedly), which I think is mostly due to people reading his work early on in life (late teens), which makes them feel like since they read it when they were young, it offers nothing of merit. But anyway, that's neither here nor there.

I loved this book. Deceptively deep and hilarious at points too. I've also read SH5 by Vonnegut, where I was introduced to Trafaldamorians. They play a huge role in this novel as well, particularly towards the end. Why did Vonnegut completely change what they looked like? In SH5, if I remember correctly, they were a stick with a hand having an eye on it's palm. In SoT, they were robots. Am I missing something here?

I also have some questions regarding symbolism in the novel:

Did the Sirens represent multiple things? At the start of the novel, I thought they represented almost the predictability of man, and how by Rumfoord showing them to Malachi, he thought it would cement Malachi making the trip to mars. By the end, it seemed like the represented something different, wherein Malachi drained Rumfoord's pool to reveal them, yet still managed to leave Titan and return to earth to die. I'm not too familiar with greek mythology or Ulysses, but did he not have to avoid the sirens in order to return home? I don't know, I feel like I'm missing something here as well.

Also, what was the significance of the fountain? I know it means something since it was mentioned twice, beginning and end, and the firetruck sprayed water when Malachi first arrived back on Earth.

Also Vonnegut general I guess, not sure what to read next. I have Hocus Pocus here, but I don't know if I want to read something by a different author before I tackle more Vonnegut.

Been a while since I've read it, so I can't help you with the symbolism. Vonnegut's the shit though, fuck the haters. Hocus Pocus is good, Breakfast of Champions is great.

Is Harrison Bergeron good? I was about to read it.

Believe it or not, most teenagers think that Vonnegut is "great". They think he's great in the same way that 10 year olds think R.L. Stein is amazing.

Try him again in 5 years and you'll see that that "undeservedly" of yours has an inaccurate prefix.

Cubic Power contradicts god. Earth
life is a fraud. Are you afraid to know?
All Educated are Stupid from brainwashing
and indoctrination.

Pedant teachers cannot comprehend their
slavery to counterfeit word and god are
outlawed.

No plant nor animal speaks word, a fraud
by evil adults. The Power Above God. My
name is Gene Ray. I represent a Power that
transcends all Gods. You are ignorant of Divine
Spirit measure existing in Great Pyramid
abstract of human blockhead androids.

Academic denial of student right to debate
Nature's Time Cube, attack messenger.
**********************************
Gene Ray has created 4 simultaneous years
as in '4-dimensional space'. Solar
system, Earth sphere by rotating it once to a
Higher Order Life. There is no 1- corner god
in 4-corner lifetime stages known as
Midday and Midnight.Where the 2 top and
bottom, front and back and 2 sides. Most
everything created has these Cube like values. No
human or god can speak Truth. Only baby is
born.Adult is not born. Without metamorphosis -
no adults. If Earth stood still, it would
have mid-day, mid-night, sun-up and
sun-down as 4 corners. Each rotation of Earth?
You are an educated stupid about 4-season
Life Cube. Only a false god or academically
brainwashed indoctrinated mindless moron would
deny that the Earth tilt, mentally, you
should recognize that Earth has a mid-night
Jesus has a perfectly vertical Earth axis
was perfectly vertical, there would be
more inclined to think that a jackass would
kick me than to understand the wisdom of
the seasons. * No infinite days within a
family metamorphosis - no adults.

If Earth stood still, it would have
mid-day, mid-night, sun-up and sun-down as 4
corners. Each rotation of Earth - equated to a
1/4 (corner). You are educated stupid as
teachers lack intelligence.

Truth is Cubic. Time is Cubic...

People just shit on Vonnegut because he gets overly praised by people who weren't willing to move into deeper literature after him. He's accessible and straightforward and by golly, it's way better to get teens into lit through Vonnegut than pretentious and superficial YA.
