It's my belief that it's now just common place and sci-fi still has too many stigmas attached to it to be taken as a serious literary form. Which is a shame because I belief cyberpunk more accurately predicted what the world would become more accurately than anything.

As time goes on I think this only proves more and more true. Hacking is now becoming a big issue, robotics are developing more and more, trans-humanism is steadily rising with the advent of cybernetic limp replacements and the stranglehold of corporations.

I would like to believe cyberpunk defined our generation but I haven't read any cyberpunk more grounded in reality with current views and analyses at our present state.

It's my belief that it's now just common place and sci-fi still has too many stigmas attached to it to be taken as a serious literary form. Which is a shame because I believe cyberpunk more accurately predicted what the world would become. It may have not introduced many radical new ideas (aside from hacking and cyberspace), but it painted a very clear picture on how it would look.

I would like to believe cyberpunk will define generation Z which is why it currently has very little interest invested in it. I can see it likely just becoming contemporary drama because of the frighteningly accurate predictions cyberpunk made. Trans humanism, corporate strangleholds, a more fragmented society, and the rise of cyber space and robotics. Some very ground breaking social changes will come within the next two decades I believe.

It's right outside your window and on your iPad. Only difference is government can still strong-arm corporations when it wants to. It just doesn't want to very often.

Norman Spinrad was a pretty awesome proto-cyberpunk. Bruce Sterling came before Gibson. There are others, most of those 'greatest cyberpunk' lists won't steer you wrong if you enjoy the genre.

I'm sorry, do you know what cyberpunk is? It's an established sci-fi subgenre. You must be new here.

Please lurk more before you overcompensate to try to fit in, and end up making an ass of yourself in the process

Honestly, I feel like you could debate that. Personally, I associate cyberpunk as more of a literary movement thats influence on sci-fi is just inescapable. In the same way "Golden Age Sci-Fi" isn't really a genre, just a movement. In that sense cyberpunk is dead, but it's genes are so infused with current sci-fi, it doesn't really matter.

But yeah, that guy was a retard.

It's not novel, but the Mirrorshades anthology is great. I also liked George Alec Effinger's stuff it's more like an old school noir in it's style, but it's nowhere near as cheesy or poorly done as some more recant stuff.

>>5511710
In my opinion, proto-cyberpunk has a lot more quality writers than actual cyberpunk does. Bester, Brunner, Burroughs, Delany, Dick, etc.

True story. Lots of themes and tropes in Cyberpunk kind of already exist with modern day tech, short of the seedy neon lit back alleys and plugging your consciousness into the internet.
