Heading out to India for a charity trip next October, and I want to get an idea of the atmosphere of the country, and what it'll be like. Fiction preferable, Non-fiction (history) cool too.

The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga (pretty sure the narrator goes way overboard in his descriptions of how terrible life is in most of India, but it's fun)
Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie
Bombay: Maximum City by Whoever Wrote That

It's not a deathless literary classic if that's what you mean. It's good, though, and certainly shares story/themes.

Read Rabinadrah Tagore, he's got poetry and prose. Also, Rudyard Kipling was british, but he lived his whole life in India. Kim is a pretty good story.

But colonialist orientalism power imbalance hegemony

my mum read sea of poppies last summer said it was really good, and she has good taste in literature, but by no means edgy

Animal's People by Indra Sinha, especially if you're going for charity. Have fun.

This is assuming you're from a western country.

Seconding Thakur.
There is a small book he wrote about the culture in India, how it is family centric, the traditions of lavish marriage in India etc.
Also, Shantaram may give you a western perspective.

Tagore was a thought, but apparently he's a bitch to read translated, what would you recommend?

>>5464331
Looks good, actually.

>>5464333
I had my reservations on saying that because, frankly, it does come across like that. You'll just have to take my word I'm not (that) insufferable.

Yeah, Irish here. Will check out the two of these.

Unsurprisingly, not the first time I've been given that advice.

None of those stop Kipling from writing a good story. And they don't stop him from having insights either.

...actually, I wonder. How much is Kipling read in India? Anti-imperialist nationalisms always end up absorbing a lot of the imperialists' culture in the process, the Indian split was friendlier than many, and I'd be surprised if even die-hard anti-Britishers could entirely hate the Jungle Book...

Not much at all. India, as a country, has yet to develop a reading habit which is fair enough when you conside that there's other shit to deal with.
