Hey /lit/

Just a reminder of the third meeting of our Wittgenstein Reading group coming up at 6pm GMT on september 21. We are meeting in irc.freenode #4chanWittgenstein to discuss sections 251 to 400 of Wittgenstein's On Certainty.

Also for anyone interested, we are doing some option extra reading of Frege's 'On Sense and Reference' to be discussed after sunday's meeting.

could someone explain to me how wittgenstein was an anti-relativist? someone say this somewhere, at least that he was in a sense

>> No.5451037

>>5451026
He never talked about relativism ...

Congrates guys.
Have fun!

>> No.5451867

>>5451037
it is a big debate cause it is implied by his writings

>>5451026
he has been said to be a relativist and of course many have defended him due to the bad image of relativism in academy and in general. to tell you the truth i would say that his late work is to relativism what his early is to solipsism. even tho he is not explicitly a relativist he is in no way an anti relativist, he just shows us that the such a question makes no sense cause it arises from a misreading of the situation. his most referenced writings on the subject are those on mathematics, where he exposes his anthropology, or what he calls "grammar".

I think calling Wittgenstein a relativist or an anti-relativist or even an anything, ethically, is very misleading, since what he did wasn't ethics nor meta-ethics but something of a meta-meta-ethics

>> No.5451908

>>5451899
well the relativism thing is not just meant as an ethical thing; actually not at all, since his philosophy does not treat ethics. it is more in the cultural sense.

>since his philosophy does not treat ethics
He has a lecture called "Lecture on Ethics" ...

>> No.5452042

>>5451970
Have you read it? Do you know about the conditions in which it was lectured? Im not saying Wittgenstein the man disregarded ethics, actually that was, if not more important, at least as important as philosophy. But the latter does not treat of ethics.

Since I won't open another Wittgenstein thread I will ask here.
Is it really neccesary to read Blue and Brown book before Philosophical Investigations?

>> No.5452833

>>5452042
Yes, I have read it, which is why I'm saying he does talk and care about ethics, only he talks about it very indirectly which is why i say what he does is like a meta-meta-ethics
>>5452724
No, but it can help
