Do you hear it? The contrarians are coming. Get ready to have all you enjoy be disparaged.

I liked him when I was younger. I prefer to read his character as being a parody of his generation, rather than a gonzo endorsement of it. What I've read of his work was funny and sentimental.

I judge the hell out of people who say he's their favorite author, though. It seems like people just use him to vindicate their drug habits.

Great author. But maybe a greater life character.

i like him for the way he used words - like a sock full of ball bearings swung at the back of your head.

if he's not the greatest writer of the 20th century, then he's definitely in 2nd or 3rd place.

he had a great way of capturing the essence of a moment or feeling. that's what i love about his work and what i envy the most: his talent of articulating clearly what was going on around him while everybody else was too involved with things to see above the waterline. i've never done any drugs at all but he's still one of my favorites to read. people have called me a poser for liking him yet never having done any drugs, but i think they're appreciating him less than i if all they care about is his drug commentary.

also interesting to note that he had a fetish for cuckolding gangbangs, thanks for introducing me to those topics, mr. thompson

Johnny Depp was a writer?

He's all right. I liked him more in high school before I actually read him/took psychedelics and smoked weed. I think I've subconsciously absorbed some of his style in my own writing. I wrote an essay on a final for a history class last year and spent a paragraph talking about madness and fear in the Amazon. I probably wouldn't have done that if I'd never read Thompson.

You're right anon. Ignore these swine, too many retarded opinions and uncouth bodies attached to those opinions to address them individually.

There are two kinds of people who like him, the first being people who are sensitive to the fine shades and tints humor in writing and to American culture, and the second being people who are heavy into drugs, or fantasize about being heavy into drugs, and derive a large portion of their self esteem from feeling superior or from conforming to the media-archetype of the Great American Outlaw. I'd say a solid 80% of his fans are from the second category, and are insufferable. As far as the first category goes, I'd rank him as a major American humorist and cultural journalist. He probably makes the list of essential American writers. Read the first few chapters of Fear and Loathing slowly and pay attention to how the sentences are carefully structured into set-ups, call backs... Nationally, he's a minor figure, if not insignificant, because of how culture-bound his writing is.

He was one of a kind.

I wish when he was devising his life after reading Sarte, that he would have made a pledge to himself, to slow down eventually.
