What does /lit/ think of Hermann Hesse?

Kind of author you want to like, then you read his books and fall asleep.

I started on Steppenwolf the other day, however I found the character to hit a little too close to home for enjoyable reading. It kinda just made me feel pathetic. So, I stopped. I'll probably pick it up again when I'm not in such a mood

I'm sure it's quite good. But it's an odd feeling when it seems someone has inserted you into their book.

It all makes me feel like an angsty little teeny bopper with purple hair parted to the side.

>He's fascinating.

Yep, he is. But his books are boring and dull as fuck.

Got my first toes in the water with Eastern mysticism through him. Was 16 or 17 reading Siddhartha, reading about OM - I remember thinking,

"What the fuck is he going on about?",

yet, I was having somatic reactions to reading about it without intellectual grasping any of it.

I like to call him Eastern-Lite, or Diet Orientalism. It's a good introduction, but obviously it's through a filtered lens, not necessarily a bad thing, though.

Demian was his best, and they are all basically the same.

Well then you're exactly the type of person who should read Steppenwolf. The ending was designed for you, to try to make you grow as a person. I don't think people who don't identify with the main character will get much out of it, at least I didn't. The lessons all seemed ridiculously obvious.

The Glass Bead Game was interesting in theory, and a complete boring slog in practice.

I love him. Steppenwolf is one of my favorite books. Tried Siddharta, but couldn't get into it the first time, i'll retry soon. Currently reading Narcisse and Goldmund, which is interesting. The Glass Beading Game seems interesting, but i'm kinda afraid of getting into a huge book like that. Like Ulysses of James Joyce.

I read Siddhartha two times, and I'm sure I'll read it again.
Planning on getting Steppenwolf

Hesse is great.

Read Narziss und Goldmund when I was 15, fapped to the passage where Goldmund fucks the two teenage sisters.

Demian made me get interested in philosophy when i was a child

He's pretty good. I've only read Siddharta, Demian and Steppenwolf. His sense of beauty and spiritual sensibility are a bit less than astounding and his books are enjoyable reads overall.

For me, he's the perfect YA writer.

Narziss und Goldmund made my heart warmer and crystalized some of my thoughts. Steppenwolf was nice too, I liked how it grew weirder to go full retard. Like taking acid and being overflowed with all your sensations, feeling extreme horrors and pleasures and being serene with lots of possibilities after whole experience. I found Hesse's writings quite significant and appealing.

I would've loved reading his stuff in high school, they were better reads then most of the required books. There must be some schools where something like Demian or Steppenwolf is in the curriculum.

I'm a senior in high school (18), we can choose to read Siddhartha to study in class.
