I have a friend that thinks George RR Martin is a better writer than Tolkien.

How do I even address retardation at that level? Help me out /lit/.

For further clarification, he seems to legitimately think Tolkien has a bad grasp of the English language and literary devices. And that because GRRM has so many well-written characters(lol) he's a better writer.

Never read any GRRM, but alll I know is that Tolkien is really bad.

We had this thread the other day.

Go read through the archives.

Tolkien might be an acquired taste to some, but Martin is painful to read.
Tolkien wrote in a bit of an old-fashioned style which can be tiring, but he knew his shit and did it well.
Martin is just full of over-descriptive purple prose, though the Starks and Lannisters are interesting, his characters just got steadily worse as he killed and made new ones repeatedly. Also, the dragons/incest in Cair Andros is kind of stupid.

I think OP is basically the same guy like in the thread from last time. He wrote basically the same

Oh great, this thread again!
tl;dr: I prefer GRRM over Tolkien too, but your 'friend's' reasons (you don't have friends, otherwise you wouldn't be doing this, but whatever) are stupid.
