Is it true that everything is subjective?

Yes, your virginity is subjecitve. You can always define yourself to be a non-virgin without ever having to have sex.

The solving for x homework your teacher gave you in school and you hated it and didn't do it and then your teacher said anon do your homework or you fail the course and you asked the nerd to copy his homework and then you passed the course and you still don't know how to solve for x but it doesn't matter because nobody needs to solve for x when all you do is selling crack and banging hookers.

Every system is an agreement between its participants and the rules. Objectivity lies in obeying the rules, but breaking the rules is not subjectivity. Subjectivity is refusing to play that particular game.

The only case where this isn't true is physics. Math also adheres to the above.

Objectivity is a concept, concepts cannot be objective.

>> No.5366860

Reality is subjective in the sense that we have no proof that what we perceive and what is have any relation. Objectivity, like free will and sincerity, is a useful fiction and after you acknowledge that reality is technically not subjective you're supposed to get on with life and pretend a few things are objective.

Art, however, is and always has been, wholly subjective.

>Objectivity is a concept
False. There exist concepts of objectivity, that is not objectivity.
>concepts cannot be objective.
Depends.

>> No.5366876

The fact you're thinking is objective. Other than that, technically everything is subjective TO YOU. That doesn't mean objectivity doesn't exist, we just can't know if it does or not.

So, excluding thinking, the only correct answer is "I don't know". Although, people can't usually handle "I don't know" as a valid answer so you'll see an excess of retards battling it out in this thread.

String theory is science, but it's not necessarily true at all. This quote baffles me. Did he actually say this?

Until our science is 100% nailed down and describes everything in the universe wholly (which I imagine it never will), then even modern science isn't "true", it's just the best model we have for right now.

The whole thing is kind of a trick of semantics though. I think maybe it's a scientism thing where people think that is something is true, it's science, and if it's not true, then it's not science.

The idea of art being wholly subjective is ridiculous. While it has an irreducibly subjective element, it also has wholly objective elements. The making of everything is the shaping of objects, whether marks on a page, a configuration of pixels, etc. Furthermore, the weight of tradition is an objective pressure on art-making.

If you're talking about strictly the critical reception, you're still wrong. A singer's performance has objective elements: what is their note range, can they enunciate well while still delivering an impact (this is measurable), can they produce a pleasing contrast between legato and staccato elements, can they stay on beat, can they fall off beat and get back on it for effect?

Wholly subjective my ass.

Perhaps you should read Adorno's "Lyric Poetry and Society." I don't even agree with all of it, but it is certainly an antidote to the idiocy that proclaims that art is wholly subjective.

>Is it true that everything is subjective?

No. If it were true that everything is subjective, then the statement that everything is subjective would be subjective. Plato refuted this sophism thousands of years ago.
