I loved the cartoon Robotech. The summer between sixth and seventh grade I found the novelization of Robotech the series at Kmat. My Mom would buy it only if I promised to read it.
I did and that simple promise opened the universe to me.
Thanks Mom.

When it was discovered in third grade that I could not read, my dad to me to his workshop the next day, sat me down on a stool next to the bench, put a tattered copy of this book on my lap, and over the course of the summer had me read the entire book out loud to him as he worked. He taught me how to read when the school wasn't willing to "waste the time" and gave me a love of books that borders on the detrimental.

My mom read this to me when I was little. We are a booky family though, so it probably would have happened eventually anyway.

Hmmm.. for me, it's probably The Stand. Only when I read it did I realize that books can be as good as, if not much better, then action films!

my dad would read me an abridged version of don quixote and do different voices for all the characters. he'd do really crappy spanich accents. it ruled.

This, and the book in my pic, are the two that got me into reading.

Robotech, fuck year. I was pretty obsessed with it, but (probably fortunately) never read the books. OP, you must be over 30?

You know, if my copy of LWW had looked like that, I never would have read it...I wonder how much my life would be different?

Pic related--somewhat less gay cover.

Fucking shit, nothing got me INTO READING. Or maybe everything did. Since i knew how to read, i read. Before that, my parents read to me. It's pretty fucking natural, you know, not a big deal.

I started reading when I was 3 years old, but I lived in Ukraine back then and only read books from my native language.

I think the question is pretty obviously "What books did you read early in life that helped make you an enthusiastic reader?" Don't be a dick.

but you still failed this part.

It's not the first book I've read, but I consider it the most important as far as my life as a reader/writer goes.
