ITT: Literature from other mediums

This show is a whirlwind of symbolism, subtext and puns that as far as I know is completely unrivaled in the western cannon. Then there's the visual gags.

I've tried getting a lot of people into that show, but none of them get it really. I hate being that guy, but I think this show is 2deep4 most people.

Rick and Morty isn't on quite the same level, but is also quite good.

It pokes fun at its own "2deep4u" nature. I disliked it at first but soon got into it.

00:02:07 >> Self: I'm asking the questions.
00:02:09 I calledyou.
00:02:10 >> Xavier: No, I calledyou.
00:02:11 And you sound like the ugliest son of a bitch I ever heard.
00:02:15 >> Self: You sound like the physical manifestation of some loser's inner demons.
00:02:20 >> Xavier: Well, you sound like some total chode's inability to confront the reality of his past actions.
00:02:26 >> Self: If I ever get your stinky mug in my line of sight, I swear to jack off, I'll cock your clock off.
00:02:33 >> Xavier: Well, I'm going to be the bigger man and hang up fi-- [ receiver clicks ] damn it!
00:02:39 Listen, we don't cotton to freaks 'round these parts.
00:02:43 Scram, weirdo.
00:02:44 >> Self: Oh, yeah?
00:02:45 I don't polycotton to copingtropes, even my own.
00:02:49 So why don't you split?
00:02:50 >> Xavier: Looks like I already did.
00:02:52 You're the sad figment of my twisted psyche's tragic dividend.
00:02:56 You're the un-me.
00:02:58 I'm the real me.
00:02:59 You want to be me?
00:03:00 >> Self: Kiddo, I was the real me when you we still in my short pants.
00:03:04 >> Xavier: Hate to break it to you, but I wore them first.
00:03:07 Me bequeathed thee the psychopathological hand-you-down.
00:03:11 >> Self: So you're the one who stained them.
00:03:13 >> Xavier: Whoever found it browned it.
00:03:15 >> Self: You'd like me to be you, wouldn't me?
00:03:18 But it's too late.
00:03:19 You snoze, you loze.

00:03:29 >> Xavier: You slumber, ham-- burger!
00:03:31 I don't want to talk about nothing else.
00:03:33 >> Self: Listen, this psyche is not big enough for two metaphysical seekers.
00:03:37 >> Xavier: You couldn't seek your way out of a cardboard bag.

00:03:45 >> Self: You're right.

00:03:50 Accept your defecation.
00:03:51 >> Self: No, thanks.
00:03:52 I'm full, 'cause I eat pussies like you for breakfast.
00:03:55 >> Xavier: Look at you.
00:03:56 You look so superficial, you probably judge things by their physical appearance.
00:04:00 >> Self: Oh, yeah?
00:04:01 Your mom's so shallow, she probably thinks this quip is about her.
00:04:05 >> Xavier: You're about as deep as a bowl of soup, and your tongue is about as sharp as a soup spoon.
00:04:10 >> Self: Hey, say what you want about me, but lay off the soup.
00:04:14 >> Xavier: If you love soup so much, why don't you marry soup?
00:04:18 >> Self: 'Cause I'm already married -- to justice.
00:04:20 >> Xavier: Yeah, only a blind girl would marry you.
00:04:24 >> Self: I know everything you're gonna -- >> Xavier: Say.
00:04:27 And I know everything you're gonna -- >> Self: Don't.
00:04:31 >> Xavier: Oh, yeah?
00:04:32 Well, when god was passing out insight, you thought he said that when god was passing out holy prophets, you thought he said, "oily faucets," 'cause your soul has diarrhea of the mouth faucet.
00:04:44 >> Self: Are you so dumb you even answer rhetorical questions?
00:04:49 >> Xavier: I don't know. do you?
00:04:50 >> Self: We can play this game all night.
00:04:53 >> Xavier: First of all, it's daytime, and this is no game.
00:04:57 >> Self: Checkmate.
00:04:58 >> Xavier: Oh!
00:04:59 So you admit that you're checking me out and you want to mate.
00:05:02 >> Self: Ooh!
00:05:03 You got a license to sell hot dogs, chico man?
00:05:06 >> Xavier: No.
00:05:07 They wouldn't give it to me because when I was filling out the application, my penis was sticking out.
00:05:13 >> Self: Oh, yeah?
00:05:14 You only got one peni?
00:05:15 Let me see it.
00:05:17 >> Xavier: See with your eyes, not with your mouth.
00:05:19 >> Self: I'll call your bluff.
00:05:21 I'll see your penis with your mouth, and I raise you with my hand.
00:05:24 >> Xavier: Ante up.
00:05:25 >> Self: Oh! damn it!
00:05:26 >> Xavier: What's wrong?
00:05:27 >> Self: I crapped out, but I'm tough.
00:05:29 I can suck it up.
00:05:30 >> Xavier: Okay.
00:05:31 Count of three, we show what's under the loincloth.
00:05:35 Wiener take all.
00:05:36 >> Both: One, two, three.
00:05:44 >> Self: I guess there's only one way to settle this.
00:05:48 >> Both: A shakashuri blowdown.
00:05:51 >> Self: I assume you're familiar with st. louis rules.
00:05:55 >> Xavier: Fine.

I have no doubts that the creators have used psychedelics because the show so perfectly represents a lot of that mindset and those experiences, but yeah, most people think this is just some weird adult swim show to watch while high. It's a shame really, I haven't seen anything else that has a similar balance of great wordplay, satire, and legitimate spiritual/philosophical quandry.

Police Squad! is comparable to Xavier in regards to clever gags.

I think the body of slam poetry that's circling youtube these days reflects the spirit of the time we live in better than any other art.

True Detective is not comparable to Xavier or Police Squad! but it is absolutely literary on its own terms. Probably moreso than any HBO show that I can think of (and absolutely more than any show that's not HBO).

There's one about bullying that went viral last year that you might have seen. Look up "To This Day" by Shane Koyzcan (and look up some of his other stuff too, like his "Blueprint for a Breakthrough" TED talk).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAx845QaOck Here's one about how the digital age functions as a way to bring people together but in reality is isolating them even more.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aop1sGjhgH8&list=UU5DH3eN81b0RGJ7Xj3fsjVg Here's one about Biggie Smalls and the impact he had on black youth.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=y_ZmM7zPLyI This is one about the reality of higher education.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCIjP3RMnMk&feature=player_embedded People Starve In America. Self explanatory.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xx5wXwfjYlA To Chase The Thing That Destroys You. A poem about obsession told through the lens of a cultural icon.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppwowTJg0mI My personal favorite by Shane Koyczan, about Beethoven.

These are just some of my favorites. I spend alot of time consuming this shit.
