His poetry's nothing special. I like his detective fiction, failed poets often pay a lot of attention to details and structure. Just finished Arthur Gordon Pym, which was enjoyable, but didn't blow me away or anything.

I think his strength as an author was his depth of knowledge about various fields. Pym went into great detail about seafaring, and was remarkably accurate.

He's no Bierce, though.
