What is it about these kids that compels them to not only write books about themselves but to take photos of their books themselves and post them on eponymous 'tumblr's?

Christ.

Even his thumb exudes narcissism.

What is it about these bitters that compels them to not only whine posts about self-publishers but to take images of these self-published books and post them on anonymous 'imageboard's?

smh.

Some lines are genuinely humorous and others not without depth or consideration, but it's all just totally marred by the representation.

>A new thing called "Basically the Old Thing".
I thought alt-lit was intended to OVERCOME postmodernism?

The line recognizes that impossibility due to the linearity of literary progress, or perhaps that's giving him too much credit.

What the hell is alt-lit anyway? Is it just books written by young pretentious hipsters or what?

Fiction hinged on internet communication. It usually walks hand in hand with New Sincerity.

Overcome developed philosophical ironies by making lots of jokes?

I agree, but there's no real relation between the parts other than the fact they are all contemporary and in the same form mostly. You could literally re-arrange the lines and you'd have basically the same poem. These all lean towards media, but there's two entries (tattoos, a new thing) that don't particularly fit. They're formally identical, set up, then italicized punch line, except for the one on Wikipedia, which suggests there SHOULD be this sort of unity. The one line that diverges, is foregrounded unnecessarily by this, suggests formal naivete. I guess these could all be, "this guy's ideas" and then, of course, this is about how good this guy's ideas are.

"One touch of nature makes the whole world kin,
That all with one consent praise newborn gawds,
Though they are made and molded of things past"

Guys I think he is Shakespeare!

So is it like David Mitchell releasing that story on twitter?

Not quite, that was just an experiment with form (Jennifer Egan did something similar, I believe).

By "internet communication," anon means that the dialogue in these works mimic the clipped and inconsequential way twentysomethings speak to each other on the internet.

Tao Lin has, admittedly, gone so far as to even almost embody that mode of thinking in the text of Taipei, but the rest are just hucksters mining their livejournals for material.
