How true is it that Dune was inspired by psilocybin? I've read that Herbert was a mushroom collector (not just the drugs kind, what a strange man) and he told a friend that all of the spice-related stuff came from his experiences with psilocybin.

Welp keep at it.

2nd and 3rd books were the weakest.

2 because nothing really happened. A lot of stuff is laid but none of it matters except 1 or 2 events.

3 because nothing really happened. And that none of it meant fuck all after the conclusion.

4 is really different. Stick with it.

5 and 6 are both good.

It was inspired by him having to write an article on some sand dunes.

It's interesting reading the shitty times him and Asimov had(Foundation). Financially and getting published.

And how there works didn't take off for a while.

Contrary to popular belief, Spice wasn't intended as a metaphor for Oil. Rather it was Water that was the intended.

Spice was just a 'what if' about people gaining the ability to gain prescience, and the addiction/dependence on such a substance.

And the quotes are in ()'s so it's just an interpretation.

This. I can understand that criticism of Dune Messiah, saying that not much happens in it, but its function is necessary, carrying the story over from the original Dune and allowing for the storyline that follows.

I've only read the first three. Dune Messiah definitely felt like a bit of a lull, but my god Children of Dune is the tits.

I just finished reading the first book a few days ago, and was curious how much of the rest of the series was worth my time. I've heard mixed receptions of pretty much everything that came after Dune.

If it helps I really fucking enjoyed the book and I've always had a hard-on for space operas and epic storytelling.

Keep reading. The last three books especially go so much further in scope than the first. If you want space opera and epic storytelling, how does a massive story spanning thousands of years across multiple planets sound?

I thought the 2000 adaption with Alec Newman was well done and worth viewing. This version follows the novel closely.

The CGI effects outdoors are not especially convincing but the indoor settings are great.

Also, the baron steals every scene he's in.
