The above post is funnier than every joke in every DFW, Pynchon, Joyce plus (all patrician authors ever).

I'm not going to go full edgy and say that the r9k post is better, because it's not, obviously. But can we all man up and admit that literature's contribution to humour is completely negligible at best? Novels are shit for humour.

You should try Joseph Heller OP.

I read catch 22 and the last book I finished was something happened.

I'm being completely non-ironic: something happened was nothing but >tfw and blogposts and it wasn't 1 % as funny as 5 minutes on r9k.

It was ok overall though

I mean, I don't laugh out loud at jokes in books the way I do when talking with friends or watching a movie, but I appreciate whenever an author makes a connection between two things that I wouldn't have thought of or when a silly situation is taken seriously by the characters. Humor is often there to remind the reader that he or she is a reader and not part of the story.

I'm tired of laughing anyway. I live in a whole culture geared towards constantly making me laugh in an attempt to endear its products to me.

As most people know stimulation is exhausting in two ways:

-too much stimulation without rest drains you out. You need time to restock the dopamine.

-you may get tired of a type of stimulation and seek for more variety.

Pleasure is not a one dimensional quality but it has complexity and subtlety.

Early Nicola Barker novels have made me laugh and feel more intimately involved with another person than any other art form.

And OP you have obviously never read Beckett's Molloy, for example:
