Hi, do you read /v/ novels /lit/?
I know it is probably the plebest/mainstream/lightest form of /lit/ but I have heard some good things for some like The Last Wish, some of Mass Effect, Deus Ex Icarus and the STALKER ones.

And The Last Wish. SO I guess those should be priorities on the list.

I used to love reading the warcraft novels, especially when Blizzard started making novel adaptations of their earlier games and connecting the lore into a lovely, linear storyline. They're like popcorn books - something to chew on to pass the time. Nothing of literary merit whatsoever. Then Arthas: Rise of the Lich King was published, and my dreams were shattered when I found that 2/3 of the book was basically a direct transcript of Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne's undead campaign with incredibly clunky narration tossed into it like a hamper of moldy jizz socks.

When I realized that they weren't going to cover the other happenings of Warcraft 3 in novel form, and that they were going to continuously release books with major plot elements that players don't even witness in game, I gave up. Not to mention they made that crappy comic (that was actually pretty darn good until Med'an was introduced.) that did some weird things with the story. But boy buddy, the way Lullabi draws ladies sure does ignite me somethin' fierce.

TL;DR: Blizzard made some nifty novels that made Warcraft a more cohesive narrative for me, but then they shat on the lore and started releasing crappier books that only take place in the current games' timelines and took away some fun opportunities from players. Also, obligatory comment stating that Knaak stinks.

>Comparing Witcher and Roadside Picnic to utter shit like Mass Effect and Deus ex books.

Witcher is actually great postmodern fantasy that has actual depth. Though I heard english translations are pretty weak. Roadside Picnic is classic.

Those other two are just shitty tie-in novels.

The proper English translations are actually supposed to be pretty good (won awards and stuff). The fanslations, however, are absolutely abysmal.

Well, I read Roadside Picnic, if that's what you're talking about.

It's an excellent book.

They do some interesting things with the lore, and it seems like they want to force central characters into the conflict, (ie Trall Jesus) but then that makes it seem like the players aren't even involved with anything significant even though they are the ones "carrying out" the plot. It's a mess. Like, what's lore and what isn't is pretty debatable sometimes. And Pre-WotLK is kinda' scattered. Post-WotLK ruined Deathwing's character, and the Old Gods are just thrown in. Rhonin kinda' existed. Mists didn't seem to advance things much. WoD seems pretty darn intriguing, I'll give them that, but it doesn't seem to advance. It all seems like filler. We all know that Azshara, the Old Gods, and the Legion are the primary baddies. If Blizzard keeps beating around the bush, then all is lost.

I enjoyed The Last Wish/Sword of Destiny quite a bit, but the whole Witcher saga thing gets kinda tedious as it goes, or maybe it's just me.

Also stay the fuck away from the Mass Effect books.

The Witcher as a book existed before the game.
I think it is some of the best fantasy (at least for me), and yes, has actual depth, a fucking epic hero, and dark humour. Also: Since it is polish stuff, you can feel the european atmosphere.

No it isn't you fucking moron, get over yourself. The books came first and the video games are an adaptation; they don't affect the content or quality of the original. The games could never have been made and the books would likely be the same (although it's perhaps arguable that he wouldn't have written as many, but I'm not sure how much the games boosted the books' popularity)

I'm reading Quantum Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner now. It won't win any awards or anything but I don't see a fan of SMT Digital Devil Saga being disappointed. Actually I don't even remember much of Digital Devil Saga (I only played the first game at release) and I enjoyed the novel.

As long as you're enjoying yourself I suppose. Need to actually play DDS. And Raidou... Even got physical copies before the reprint, still haven't played them...

Never seen NGE, so that doesn't actually tell me anything.
