It's just bullshit. /lit made a statement that the reason was because he called girls he wanted to bang first, then phoebe so he could let out his sexual frustration on her. This is obviously wrong considering Holden got a hooker and didn't bang her, but tried to have a conversation instead. I think he just feels alone, and he wants someone to talk to, not bang. Therefore he calls Phoebe.

I feel like this book gets abused by the school system, assigned to teens hoping they'll relate to Holden, while often times it backlashes and they complain that he's too whiny, when both of those perspectives miss the point of the book. Read it when you're an adult.
