I just graduated from here. I went to Centre college for a year, but I couldn't handle the liberal arts environment. UC's department wasn't really that great for my department, but there were a few really helpful professors that took a lot of interest in me. They're helping me revise a few essays for publications. I felt really fortunate finding faculty so involved at a state school.

My first year of college, I went to Centre College. I couldn't handle such a traditionally liberal arts college, but the demographics there were skewed in all kinds of fucked up ways, so maybe I would have enjoyed other liberal arts schools. 53% of the student body was on a varsity sport team, and there was nothing to do around there but drink, which is fun, but it got old fast. I made really good friends there though.

I moved out this past year, but it's... quiet. A good place to raise a family, but an awful place to be a young writer and young adult. Hence my leaving.

But I loved Baylor, especially the Honors College. All my professors related to my major were fantastic, and they helped bolster my love of literature and learning.

Dr. Stark teaches Sociology of Religion, in the Sociology Department, with, I assume time in the Religion department as well. I pretty much stayed away from both departments during my time at Baylor. My only real experience with the Religion department was during my Christian Scriptures and Christian Heritage classes.

I DID have the great privilege of taking an Oxford Christians/Inklings class under Dr. Ralph Wood, who is fantastic. I believe he's a noted Tolkien scholar, and we read The Lord of the Rings, The Screwtape Letters, War In Heaven (Charles Williams), The Nine Tailors (Dorothy L. Sayers). It was a wonderful class.

The Nine Tailors is still one of my favorite books.

MAt 319 isn't that hard if you read the texbook. if it doesn't make sense you need to reread it slower.

mat 310 is babyshit compared to 319. matrices eigenvectors and ranks and rank nullity blah blah blah

go to every class and recitation (especially 319's double recitations) no matter how excruciating it is. write down everything in lectures (except maybe some examples of shit you already understand) half the battle of these classes is rote memorization of the facts. the other half is understanding how to problem solve using those facts.

if you don't get something, go to the office hours. I'm serious. office hours from the professors are always helpful to me.

there is a high likelyhood that you can get some if not all your textbooks for free online if you google hard enough

Art and literature are disciplines that have historically been practiced by the upper class. Only recently has an 'art degree' become a thing, and now the bourgeois want in on it even if they can't afford it. It's almost a luxury discipline. If you have to take out loans to go to college, there is no way in hell you should be considering anything to do with art unless you're a prodigy of some sort. But if the education is to be paid for in full and you are someone who has a passion for art and for contributing to the cultural pool of your nation (and beyond), then I cannot see why denying someone that path would be advisable. If all else fails, professorship or education is always an alternative avenue.

A sound society comes before the generating of cultural work, and I think any first-world nation qualifies as a sound society in which cultural work should be done without ridicule. It is, after all, the kinds of art in our respective communities that engenders culture and in turn distinguishes you from me and us from others. It provides a unique identity that globalized brands, medicine, and technology cannot. And it is therefore important to protect.

Alright there's truth to this but a) doesn't the fact someone can't afford it suggest they're not so bourgeois after all and b) what if they aren't studying with the intention of creation? cause that's gonna be the case for a lot of people, especially in philosophy. do you think its worth it just to educate others (the majority of which will do the same thing) on the off-chance one student out of 30 might be a genuine artist? I ask as someone intending to study theoretical film studies (i.e. no practical element) who will most likely go into a career in education. I mean in a sense I believe that all aspects of existence have potential for influence and therefore are worthwhile and worth utilizing but I keep wrestling with the idea that any influence I have as a professor (directly related to my work as a professor) will just lead to dead ends

and to answer your other question, no. However David Foster Wallace is infamous on this board for being the Author of Infinite Jest, a gargantuan novel with over 300 footnotes, and a very good one at that

but oddly enough, the book I recommended has even more. over 400, approximately 1.3333 per page. And I loved the book because it illuminated for me many topics gone over in MAT 319. any degree you receive from a liberal arts college is a "liberal arts" degree. generally speaking, a liberal arts degree just means you were encouraged to undergo coursework outside your primary field(s).

I'd consider an engineering degree from Harvey Mudd a "liberal arts" degree for this reason.

Also, I know of many liberal arts colleges with programs that allow students to do liberal arts for 3 years then engineering at another university for 1-2 years and you graduate with a bachelors liberal arts degree from the college and a masters in engineering from the university.

Several NESCAC schools have this arrangement with Cornell and Columbia, in case anyone else wanted a slice of the best of both worlds.
