The profiteers at my library have started charging money for interlibrary loans. I now need an e-reader.
The Kindle Paperwhite looks like a fairly good choice, but having to convert everything to mobi is a drawback for me, having the device linked with my Amazon account sets off my paranoia, and I have read some (not very detailed) criticism of its management of large collections.
Is the Kobo Aura HD a better product?
How much of an upgrade is a Paperwhite over a standard Kindle?

This is a literature board, for fuck's sake. Do you want us to use the plebeian language of the other boards?

I think your reluctance about Amazon is justified. Also their unwillingness to support the epub format is intended to lock you in to mobi. (You'll want to get Calibre regardless of any of this.) I have a Nook by the way, and it's fine.
