@OP - it depends on the level of acceptance of one's own death that one has. I think the first reaction is bound to be panic, but when death is accepted thoroughly I think the actions one chooses to take after that are very indicative of the person's true self. In the face of death, there are no longer any meaningful rewards for holding a facade.

I disagree. The idea that suddenly everyone is able to tap into their "true self" upon the thought of death is more than a little trite to me. In fact, I think the opposite is true. Knowing that one will die soon will put the fear of God into him, either literally or figuratively. Plenty of people make amends or change their behavior just because of how they want to be remembered or received in an afterlife. That doesn't make them good people at heart. We are what we repeatedly do. If you're a bastard for 70 years and a nice guy for 5 years, in my book you're still a bastard.

That's coming from experience too. I've been in stressful training where everyone wants to be a team player, because if they aren't, they'll suffer. Some people say that you are only a good as you are under pressure or some other derivative to refer to how you respond to stress. In reality, there are just two different versions of a lot of people. One that is willing to be of value and do the right thing and one that isn't. As soon as the training ended, some of the people who were the hardest workers and most determined to succeed turned into the biggest jackasses and were of little value to anyone. Which one of them was the "real" one? Is there even such a thing? I think instead of waiting for a test or waiting for the chance to live like you're dying, if you want to be someone be them every day.

It's not too late now and it probably won't be too late tomorrow, but why wait? Don't let the idea that when you know it's the end you'll really straighten out be an excuse for the way you are now.
