Hey /lit/ I've read Stranger in a Strange Land (the long version) by Heinlein and thought it sucked. Is anything else by Heinlein worth reading? I've heard that Starship Troopers is good, for example.

Also, what science fiction books would you recommend? (I like Asimov and HG Wells)

Starship Troopers is the work of a fascist: I cannot abide this man.

I suggest you leave the child's realm of science-fiction and turn to the work of other, more literary men

Not if you don't like Stranger. It is his best work by far.

Science-fiction childish... have you ever read Aldous Huxley or H.G. Wells?

If you absolutely must read something else by him, make it be The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. And even that I wouldn't recommend.
I thought his stuff was ok when I first read it but with time I changed my mind. It's silly as fuck.

From what I've read I completely agree. Stranger in a strange land seemed like cheap philosophy repeated over and over again to make you believe it.

>Aldous Huxley
A drug-addled charlatan, a false philosopher, and a false psychiatrist. No merit or logic to the thoughts which fueled his offensive prose. Dismissed.

>H.G. Wells
A writer of children's fiction and not to be taken seriously by adults. A mediocre political commentator, a turgid writer, a poor historian. He did not understand how to form a complex and intelligent character as he was a simple and unintelligent man. Dismissed.

apparently the first version of the novel was heavily abridged and had lots of cuts by the editor. years later heinlein actually got more famous and could afford to publish what he wanted so he published a longer one.

Starship Troopers is the only Heinlein I read and I thought it was decent.

I really enjoyed Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by PK Dick. I read the whole thing in one sitting.

I liked The Fantastic Voyage by Asimov. I read half of I Robot and it just seemed to dry for me, this book was much more of an easy enjoyable read.

The Fantastic Voyage is a movie novelization, whereas I, Robot is the one with some substance. Stop making SF readers look bad.

I thought the same as you about SIASL but Starship Troopers was ok.

I'm not being ironic or trolling when I say that reading lots of literature and patrician stuff has made me think that lots of sci fi is badly written boring stuff. I was really disappointed with childhood's end. I got bored of the fountains of paradise. I can't stand PKD's writing, although I'll give him another chance despite not really liking 4 of his novels. The one I found ok (the one about water on mars or something) ironically had the most conventional and least interesting set up. Gateway had a great set up, but that was when I realised the importance of prose and the legitimate inferiority of genre fiction (I read it straight after Pale Fire, and I thought Pale Fire would be dull and serious in comparison lel).

However, I liked both of the HG wells books I read. The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester is the fastest paced novel I've ever read and it's bursting with lots of cool ideas that he doesn't even dwell on.

There's the obvious F451 and the Kurt Vonnegut sci-fi (cat's cradle, S5, sirens of titan) which I all liked a lot.

Be aware that the movie is not the book. If you read it you'll get a feel for why they did the movie as they did, while still seeing it's nothing like what Heinlein intended.

SST should do you up nicely, give it a shot.

It's a bit of a military adventure story with the Hmeister's views on sociology thrown in. If you find yourself not digging it, don't sweat it - just drop it. Heinlein's not your thing then, no big deal.

Nailed it. Nothing goes better while overthrowing the Song Dynasty and marching across Central Asia than some lasers and space opera.
