What are some books I can read to help me understand music?

Doctor Faustus

my instinct was to say dont bother, just keep listening, but that's a little reductive

you need to focus anon. What aspects of music are you interested in? What scenes? What ideals do you hold about music?

Also, this is a fantastic book and david byrne knows more about music than you and I ever will. This is more about how music interacts with the outside world though a/o/t music at its very core in a completely decontextualized culture-vacuum (byrne is quick to pose the idea that such a thing doesn't exist and isn't worth discussing)

I am completely convinced that Remain In Light is the greatest album of all time

Yeah and that's like widely considered a low point. If Listening friggin Wind is the low point of the album you know you're in for something special

roger scruton's book about the aesthetics of music

his judgement gets really fucking dodgy towards the end where he goes full patrician and starts slagging off popular music based on how well it adheres to classical counterpoint, but the first few chapters where he breaks down all the elements of what music IS are fucking great

He just parrots information you can read anywhere before going full curmudgeon

well yeah, but i like the way it's laid out. it's concise enough whilst going into enough detail and packed with decent examples. as a general overview for what music is and how it works, it's pretty great if you ignore his old man rants (and part of me really likes them too)
