I'll admit I exaggerated. I liked the first part (Tocatta), where Littell states that in a war any person at the right place and time would have acted like Aue or other high-ranking Nazis. It basically states there is no easy way to define who is good or bad, or if you'd be different if you were in his shoes. Aue is just like me and you.

But in the following parts Littell goes out of his way to make Aue seem as strange or immoral as possible. For example, he gets his twin sister pregnant, fucks a tree and murders his mother. I think the notion that was described in the introduction has no value when you proceed to tell a story of a person who is not at all like any other human.

I read Foreign Devils on the Silk Road. And while it's interesting in detailing this unknown part of history, I found Hopkirk had the annoying habit of skipping to some other story just when the one he was telling was getting interesting. Is this book the same? Because I've had an interest in it ever since I read the blurb in Foreign Devils.

It was also refreshing to read a book that, for once, is unapologetic in proclaiming support for Western actions in history.

This pisses me off. This suggestion that white people living in a white country that has been white since the dawn of time studying their own white history is somehow racist. Fuck these people. If you want to study non-white people who had impact on the world, you can go to China and the Middle East. Good luck in the Middle East, though. What, with all the wars and racist anti-Western sentiments.

Also, if a man from Ancient Greece or Rome were to be dropped in politically correct America today, he would be labelled "Hispanic". Unless he was rich, I guess.

Essentially you two are correct. Nevertheless, it is important to keep in mind, when reading Gombrowicz, that his world view changes from Ferdydurke to Cosmos: viz. the former places emphasis on forsaking propriety and stereotypes by utilizing laughter as a pure negation of the absurd world, whilst, with the latter, the protagonists, or the characters, come to face Being itself due to their attempt at destroying order (insanity vs the struggle of finding meaning and purpose in the absurd world). Thus, in Cosmos, Gombrowicz reveals that the true Evil is concealed in the void and chaos of a world deprived of any kind of principal ordering idea. Yet, this intellectual operation calls forth God from nonexistence, and thus Gombrowicz, the declared atheist, restores the idea of the Absolute which is "the sublimation of an instinctive fear of the chaotic and unknowable nature of the world". Gombrowicz wrote in his Diary: "Do not make a cheap demon of me. I will be on the side of human order (and even on God's side, though I do not believe) to the end of my days; also as I die".

It is funny: Poland considered him an absolute anarchist at one point cause he rejected the idea that God was the Absolute ordering of the universe.
