The Anonymous hackers are influential because they can hack and are numerous, they don't need 4chan. The rest of us are just people wasting their time on anime and pointless discussions. This is the new frontier for inconsequential overheated debate. You'll perhaps be able to trace back some activist' success to a 4chan discussion, but at the end of the day, what matters is motivation, vision, conviction and discipline, and this place is sorely lacking on those respects. If one discussion here turns out to be world-changing on the long term, we would most likely only have had a very marginal influence on it.

To put it in a concise way: 4chan is the internet equivalent of drunken discussions in bars. Those are influential when the people engaging in them are talented and driven or influential and give much credibility to what is said in those conversations. Now see how those criteria correlate with 4chan. We're a symptom more than anything else.

i like being able to say whatever i want with no repercussions. it's fun. free interaction is always more rewarding than moderated interaction; you learn more about yourself and others.

Of course. I'm saying 4chan is a very small and not really significant part of that environnment. As I said, political correctness on 4chan (and honestly current 4chan isn't that politically correct) is more a consequence of what happens outside that the other way around. If you want to complain about manipulation, talk about manipulation of TV an radio broadcasting, of newspapaer, of books, of investigative journalism blogs (the real kind who reports investigation on the field) and so on, about political correctness in the workplace, on campuses or political speeches. 4chan (and tumblr and those kind of sites) are really small part of the very thin surfaces of things. As for facebook and twitter, they were conformists hugboxes from the get-go, so perhaps we should reflect more on why the demographics they attract are so bent on political correctness in the first place. I doubt 4chan is among the answers.
