Thank you. I like finding books that aren't just overly esoteric for no reason but are also slightly underdiscussed here on /lit/. I'm hoping to make one for thrillers and mysteries next. That or horror which is a VERY difficult genre to find good stuff for, let alone stuff that isn't mentioned every damn thread.

agreed that is a terrible pic, almost like it is designed to discourage people from wanting to read poetry. picked terrible translators for the non-English texts there. avoid. avoid that list

I recommend Bloom's "Best Poems of the English Language" for anyone looking to into poetry

Some grammar and writing recs

For Grammar there's obligatory Elements of Style. The "Only Grammar Book You'll Ever Need" is a nice and portable rundown of a lot of grammar rules. There's no one definitive guide for grammar, just a lot of books that have rising and falling degrees of quality depending on what you're looking for. Spunk & Bite is a great guide to fresh, contemporary writing and regardless of whether you agree with it, it can give you some good direction as far as the writing style you want to adopt.

On words in general, try the Eymologicon or recently published Authorisms which is basically a short dictionary of all nonce words and phrases by authors that are in current use today--I didn't even know that "you struck gold" or its variants was coined by Mark Twain.

On writing itself, I highly recommend Annie Dillard's "The Writing Life". It's a short (~120 pages) no bullshit book about what it means to write, what it means to be a writer, and what you should expect, etc. It's a moving meditation. There's also Steven King's "On Writing" but that's longer and much more autobiographical.

That one and Catcher didn't make the cut. I don't want to pick super obvious or well-known reads where every book has been talked about to death here. So although Stephen's King It is extremely popular for example, it's usually praised as being a horror book so I wanted to underline its coming of age themes. And Cormac McCarthy is talked about constantly here but 99% of the time it's about Blood Meridian.

I could have also included stuff like To Kill a Mocking Bird but I'm sort of trying to find books along the lines of The Cement Garden and The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys that could use a little more attention.
