I am reading Rimbaud in english for the first time after reading in his poems in french and in a portuguese translation.

I have to ask: what the fuck was this Oliver Bernard doing? The whole thing is ruined. The rhymes are gone, the cadence is gone, even part of the imagery is gone. Was his objective to make Rimbaud seem as dull as possible? Is there a decent english translation out there?

are better IMO than those of O. Bernard.

But if you can read french, I don't see the point of reading Rimbaud in English.

Translations are always betrayals, especially in poetry
