AS I SAID BEFORE I, SEVERIAN, POSSES AN IMPECCABLE MEMORY, FOR I WISH I KNEW WHAT I TWAS LIKE TO BE ABLE TO FORGET ANYTHING, BUT EVERY MEMORY BECOMES A PART OF MY VERY BEING AND I REMEMBER EVERYTHING AS IF THEY HAPPEN PRESENTLY. ANYWAY I FORGOT WHAT THIS MOTHERFUCKER LOOKED LIKE BUT

holy shit sev shut the fuck up, when does he start rebooting the sun?

>when does he start rebooting the sun?
Never.

The book ends with him going "welp, I'm the king of everything now. Time to go save the universe, I guess."

Why is BotNS fanart so fucking weird?

That is not at all how I pictures the averns. I picture them as like, venus fly traps the size of a mace.

The book is pretty weird, let's be honest.

I picture them as basically giant roses the color of moonlight, with leaves like tropical plants.

Wow, you grew up fast. Just a few weeks ago your father was in here asking what to name you.

I pictured them as a sort of aloe plant, sharp and jagged edges, crossed with a cactus. Based Wolfe.

>> No.5120669

How come everybody forgets the detail that Terminus Est has a man's head at the end of one side of the crossguard, and a woman's head at the on the other side? It's so the carnifex can remember which side of the blade is the male side and which side is the female side.

>> No.5120686

>>5120669
No it doesn't.

>I shall not bore you with a catalog of her virtues and beauties; you would have to see her and hold her to judge her justly. Her bitter blade was an ell in length, straight and square-pointed as such a sword’s should be. Man-edge and woman-edge could part a hair to within a span of the guard, which was of thick silver with a carven head at either end. Her grip was onyx bound with silver bands, two spans long and terminated with an opal. Art had been lavished upon her; but it is the function of art to render attractive and significant those things that without it would not be so, and so art had nothing to give her. The words Terminus Est had been engraved upon her blade in curious and beautiful letters, and I had learned enough of ancient languages since leaving the Atrium of Time to know that they meant This Is the Line of Division

He mentions later that male side is used for cutting male heads, and the female side female heads. The sword doesn't literally have male and female heads on it.

>> No.5120694

>>5120686

It says right there, it has heads on either end of the guard.

That is not what carven head means. And even if it did, it doesn't say anything about the heads being male or female. The gender is applied to the blade, not the guard.

Its truely unfilmable/drawable/animatable
Look at all these different ideas of the same creature. Id say thats what makes the books draw me in

>> No.5122659

I don't want to create a new thread for this so here we go. I'm 100 pages into the first book and I'm confused about the backstory. Will I get to know more about the world and its intricacies as the story goes on or is this it?

>> No.5122831

>>5122659
As far as backstory goes, not really. Though I heard a lot of that is explained in urth of the New Sun, which I haven't read.

>> No.5122887

>>5122831
Huh. See, I have no problems reading it and understand what is going on. It's pretty easy on the eyes. But actually understand some stuff behind the scenes and whatnot. Like, some backstory on the world itself. But given the perspective of the narration this might be intentional..

>> No.5123259

>>5122887
It sort of is. Wolfe will drop details on you dozens of chapters and hundreds of pages into the story that make you go, "Oh, okay."

For example, I think you're well into the second book before he mentions definitively that Severian doesn't wear a shirt. It's sort of implied before, but you can miss it if you're not paying attention.

Are male and female sides of a blade an actual thing? What's the difference, and why is it there?

>> No.5124279

Don't try so hard on your first read. It's way more fun to get blindsided by Wolfe (and most of the time your own wishful thinking).

You bring your third eye on re-reads, now that you already know what is going to happen, you can see the mechanism in place, a labyrinth of gears.

I just finished Shadow, should I just go straight on through to Claw?

I do like the strange tone of the book. Very dream like, unmentioned connections that you would only assume from a dream. As in seeing someone for the first time, but still feeling familiarity. Also got that from how disconnected the events seems.

Also, Dorcas is the dead wife of the old man from the garden, right? The chapter was called Dorcas even though she didn't show up until the very end, and even then wasn't named, bur the old man referred to his wife as " 'Cas "

I just finished BotNS. I am feeling a sort of depairing sadness and utter disappointment at the realization that I will never have the ability or skill to write anything half as good as what I have just read.
