I liked Catch-22 a lot. I was supposed to read huck finn in high school but I never read back then. By the time I started reading when I was 20 and went back and read most the books I was assigned in high school I had lost my copy of that one.

Those are all good choices to start with.

Also re: highschool, I'm probably one of the younger people on this board (recently turned 20), and we didn't get assigned any of those in my highschool. We didn't even get assigned 1984. Instead we got Life of Pi and Kite Runner. Thanks America

19 here. Life of Pu, Kite Runner, The Things they Carried, The Curious Case of the Dog in the night with autistic children or some shit ..

Yeah. Why were we given nothing but b-list shit senior, but freshman year I swear we were assigned the best shit. The Odyssey, Shakespeare, Frankenstein.

I think the schools try to get the required ones out of the way then just let teachers do whatever, which usually means books for middle schoolers or Safeway-checkout-line-tier shit. We also had to analyze Bob Dylan, Beatles, and Cake lyrics.

read it, it's surprisingly funny for such an old book
