Otherwise known as, "Yes it's shit but fuck you, I liked it." Let's have the cheapest, nastiest pop culture dreck that can be found in a discount bin. Pic related.

Now, these books are awful right-wing drivel... but there's some enigmatic factor in the writing which fascinates me. I find the pages-long descriptions of absurd numbers of missiles being launched and ships being destroyed weirdly compelling - and he writes his shitty characters in exactly the same style, producing very strange 'literary' effects.

I devoured Mercedes Lackey books by the bucket load in high school. Every now and again I try to pick them up again but the magic isn't there anymore...

that would have been a huge bucket because through Baen Books she shares co-writer credits on hundreds of books
It got so bad that Harlan Ellison did a piece on the matter in his SciFi channel spots

It was indeed a huge bucket. I had thirty odd of her books, and there were dozens more out there. So much teenage angst and pretty horses...

I read all of these multiple times as a child, and they still hold a special place in my heart.

Loved this shit. The upcoming film looks like an obese American sodomising a beheaded donkey.

I am not impartial to breaking bad, despite the fact that I hated the characters and development. And the writing.

I love that Sienkiewicz cover art.

Wish I knew what the style was called. Plenty of paperback covers in the 60s and 70s featured that look.

For fantasy covers I recommend you take a look at Earl Norem's cover arts for the Conan series. Another really good artist is Jeffrey Jones, although his style is a bit more abstract. And ofcourse the master of fantasy art, Frank Frazetta, is always worth a look.

Chuck Palahniuk and Dan Brown are my "yeah, it's shit but I kinda dig it" authors.

I also buy a lot of years'-best type horror anthologies. Mammoth books, Datlow books, Best Dark Fantasy and Horror et al. Lots of shit in there (for instance, there's this couple editors who always buy some Neil Gaiman story/poem so they can put his name on the cover) but there's always a couple legit spooky pieces buried in tehre somewhere.
