The Metamorphosis, whats /lit/s interpretation of Kafka's the story?
"If Kafka's"The Metamorphosis" strikes anyone as something more than an entomological fantasy, then I congratulate him on having joined the ranks of good and great readers". Was there any Truth to Nabokov Statement?

>> No.508563

Seemed like a basic "Humans are the real monsters" kind of story.

I didn't know Gregor was that big.

Pretty sure that wasn't the point being made. I can see why you would think that though, taking it at face value.

I thought it was more a analogy of the chore and sacrifice that are disabled people to their families and society

>> No.508599

I think The Metamorphosis is fantastic for depicting the growth of a certain broad type of intelligent but directionless person emerging from youth into adulthood and finding themselves as more of a pest to those around them, no longer a beloved family member.

I thought it was more about the chore and sacrifice that are disabled peoples to their families and society, and how people and their emotions can chance due to the circumstances

>> No.508603

THe interpretation I've read is that it represented kafka's development as a writer; You shut yourself off from society and become a verminous parasite in a family situation. His father had very high pressure on him, and probably thought very little of Kafka's desire to write

this. also adding, sometimes people just treat you like a bug.

That's fair, but I think his disability is being intelligent and directionless and depressed, rather than an actual physical disability.

Its just one of those days

Everything is fucked
Everybody sucks

It's always useful, also, to point out that the actual German word used to describe Gregor at the beginning ISN'T literally "bug", it's more properly translated to "pest" or "vermin", the word used actually meaning "unclean animal not suitable for sacrifice".

Yeah, it honestly struck a chord with me personally. Within the last few years, since I've lived on my own, I felt the banality and depressiveness of middle class life kind of crushing me so I spurned it in spite. I've given up on commonalities like love, economic success and personal status into order to grow intellectually and creatively. I often get the impression that my friends and family have started seeing me as an eccentric and even as a pest at times. I'm so wrapped up in my own mind and personal work that we can't really relate like we use to. It's almost like self imposed alienation but on an unconscious level; as if I were some foreign creature like an insect.

Maybe they do feel that way. Though I wouldn't necessarily call myself selfish, since as I'm the one giving everything up but egocentric... quite possibly.
