actual answer: Typhon or one of the other early autarchs "damaged" the sun in an unsuccessful attempt at stellar engineering

It's easy to miss if you're not reading carefully, but it's there in the text.

Pic related, if you're a serious fan of BotNS this is an excellent reference book that catches a lot of subtleties you might have missed.

... I always figured the Sun had just sorta died out because the series is set millions of years in the future

Aliens are assholes, put a black hole (G.W. didn't understand physics) on our Sun, once Severian does UoTNS stuff then a "white hole" will replace the black hole. Maybe Gene did understand what he was writing and "black/white hole" is Severian's unreliable account of the problem and solution. Maybe the aliens were siphoning our sun power.

I thought the same thing too, but it's not the case

>> No.5085261

>>5085243

This, except it was humans from Earth/Urth, not aliens.

I choose to believe that "black hole" is Severian's unreliable account of some complicated-but-plausible physics thing, because otherwise that's pretty retarded.

The point is that humanity destroyed its own sun out of lust for power, which is why the "angelic" but still deeply alien Hierodules ("god-worshippers") offer Severian/Christ the chance to redeem humanity

I've never read UTNS. What are the Hierodules? God to Severian's Jesus role? Charitable aliens with the power to remedy the sun?

Wolfe understands physics. He's an engineer for fucks sake. In the New Sun universe, "black pits" are portals into the lower dimension "Abbodon", while "white fountains" are portals into the high dimension "Yesod". Even in our universe, a black hole small enough could exist in the middle of the sun, and very slowly drain the energy from it. Say, a black hole the size of a bread box. (maybe too big!) If black holes are portals to other dimensions, than the mass/energy they consume would be deposited there, rather than increasing the size of the black hole.

The Hierodules are in New Sun proper. They are the aliens that attack Baldanders with the "dream" at the end of Claw, and the aliens Severian meets in Baldanders Castle in Sword. They are angel like, servants of the arch angels, the Hierogrammates, who were created by man, the Hieros. Its a weird circle, that maybe or maybe not exist in liner time. The Hieros made the Hierogrammates, who made the Hierodules, who convince Hieros to make the Hierogrammates. A lot of this is explained by the woman Severian lets go in Thrax.

> If black holes are portals to other dimensions, than the mass/energy they consume would be deposited there, rather than increasing the size of the black hole.

That's not what happens though. A black hole's even horizon will always increase in size in proportion to the amount of mass it contains. The area of the event horizon is representative of the maximum amount of entropy that can exist in that area. Look into the Holographic Principle

The physics of a fiction universe is not the same as ours. In fact, in New Sun, the "key to the universe" is that time and space restart over and over, like the life, blooming, and death of a rose.
